Prepare for recovery following a cyber attack to minimise impact

Recovery from a cyber attack is more important than preventing the attack itself. Planning and practicing for an attack will help identify important changes that need to be made to business procedures, communication, and it system management.

How to plan for successful recovery following a cyber attack

Most cyber security attacks aim to disrupt your business sufficiently enough that a demand for money (ransom) will be met, or in more serious cases, your customer and corporate data will be at risk of being sold to miscreants. Discover what it takes to recover from a cripling attack, and how to respond should your data become exposed.

Keep backups of all business data

Make sure that a copy of data is maintained on a frequent basis, and consider storing this off-site or even offline. Multiple backups should be kept over time, because some attacks are well thought out and gradual.

Create a recovery plan and share it

Determine how employees and contractors should react during and following an attack, including alternative arrangements for communication and work arrangements. Some attacks can take systems offline for extended periods.

Practice with a mock event

Enact precautions and response processes with a mock event, to help employees become familiar with their responsibilities and actions. Perform this when new employees have joined your team.

Remember to remain calm and patient

Engage with professional cyber security and event recovery experts, and don't rush to restore, view, or browse backups. Some threats remain hidden and sneak into backups, and restoring them could result in further data loss and attacks.

Inform the government

Businesses have a duty to disclose breaches, data leaks, and successful attacks to the government. Cyber attack insurance providers will also need to be alerted as soon as an attack occurs, as they may have preferred providers for recovery and event analysis.
